At Verdant Gardenworks, we are dedicated to creating beautiful and sustainable landscapes for garden enthusiasts. Our mission is to enhance outdoor spaces while promoting environmental stewardship.

Our business model is a subscription based one in which we supply services to our customers that include Spring and Fall cleanups with mulch, fertilizer and plantings. Then monthly care of all your horticultural needs throughout the entire year.

CHRIS WALSH, Founder

In the beginning...

From an early age in Oakton, Virginia, Chris developed a profound appreciation for the outdoors. What began as a childhood interest in vegetable farming and dividing hostas blossomed into a small lawn mowing business, eventually influencing his academic pursuits at William and Mary (BA) and George Washington University (Design Certificate). During his time on the Williamsburg campus, he was fortunate to work alongside John McFarlane, RLA, in the greenhouse, where he designed seasonal plantings and honed his skills in maintaining large-scale university garden spaces. It was in this environment that he merged his passion for plants with the artistic appeal of container designs. Since then, Chris has designed gardens in Washington, D.C., Maryland, Virginia, Chicago and retreat gardens in Southwest Michigan. His philanthropic endeavors have also taken him to Rwanda, where he continues to refine the evolving master plan for the 154-acre mixed-use campus of the ASYV project, embodying the philosophy, “If you see far, you will go far.”

His Expertise

Chris spent 15 years working in Chicago as a residential landscape designer and landscape estate manager for several prominent gardens in and around the city. 

Verdant Gardenworks marks a return to taking the helm running a landscape design and build company partnering with his husband, Scott Ferguson. Over the last 20 years, he has dedicated himself to creating unique and sometimes flamboyant seasonal decor and long-term garden maintenance, navigating the unique challenge of maintaining estate gardens while simultaneously creating elaborate annual visual displays that celebrate the seasonality of Southwest Michigan.

Chris currently serves on the "Experience Committee" of the Ilandscape Trade Show, where he is part of the team that designs and builds the Illinois Landscape Contractors Annual Trade-show. He frequently delivers talks on topics such as "Rooftop Gardening," "Know Maintenance Gardening," and "Enhancing Seasonal Decor in Containers."

In his spare time

In his spare time, like when he is not training for his next marathon -he joyfully experiments with new planting combinations in his home garden and container arrangements. Living full time in Michigan, where he is cherished by his husband, Scott Ferguson, and their mini wire-haired dachshund, named Rufus.  A dedicated theater enthusiast and lover of musical theater, Chris often finds himself humming familiar tunes from performances, occasionally even recalling the lyrics.
